OpenTok mobile SDKsA few days ago we released version 2.4.1 of our Android and iOS SDKs. This update to our SDKs were prompted by Mozilla’s implementation of a security enhancement which we fully support. However, this enhancement has the unfortunate side effect of making older versions of our mobile SDKs incompatible with Firefox 38 (scheduled to hit production on/around May 12, 2015). Not to worry though, the 2.4.1 SDK fixes this compatibility issue.

What did Mozilla change?

In an effort to bolster security Mozilla updated the encryption scheme for DTLS negotiation of the WebRTC handshake.

How are OpenTok applications affected?

If your OpenTok-powered mobile application (Android and/or iOS) interops with a web version (OpenTok.js) in Mozilla Firefox through a relayed session, the DTLS negotiation will fail and the connection will not be established.

To resolve this, you will need to recompile and resubmit your app to the Google Play and/or the App Store.  Our updated SDKs are below:

To ensure your users don’t experience service disruptions, we encourage you to migrate over before Firefox 38 rolls into production on May 12, 2015. If you don’t make this update before that date, your users will see a black screen for participants on Mozilla Firefox 38.

In addition to this critical fix, the OpenTok iOS SDK 2.4.1 also includes:

  • A fix for an issue with media streaming preferring cellular data connections over WiFi.
  • Support for Cocoapods (pod ‘OpenTok’, ‘~> 2.4′).
  • A fix for an issue in which an app could deadlock when starting or stopping audio or receiving an incoming call.
